Albarya is an organic medronho brandy produced from the orange-reddish berries of the strawberry tree (Arbutus uñedo), it is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the family Ericaceae, native to the Mediterranean Basin and Western Europe.
Albarya means “the wild one” – an Arabic word that encapsulates all we care about and a way to homage the Moorish inhabitants that first introduced Copper stills in Portugal, and lived thrived and brought so much culture for many centuries. This is most likely the period the production of medronho started in Portugal (around the 8th century). By naming our brandy The Wild One, we also celebrate the wild berries which our medronho spirit is made of.
And most of all: Albarya is a reminder of that untamed, cheeky part of ourselves that remains rooted in nature. Our very own Wild.
Every bottle of Albarya is filled with the highest respect for nature. The berries we use are natural wild grown and hand-picked while the pruning offcuts are repurposed to make the woodfire on which our medronho is distilled. Rest assured that no fossil fuels and zero pesticides are involved in the process of making Albarya.
We know that every detail matters when it comes to quality. Our medronho is copper distilled over wood fire, barrel aged and matured for at least 5 years. We combine tradition with technology so that Albarya’s gifts can be revealed immediately as it meets your mouth: a unique rich fruity aroma combined with the depth of smoky oak and the tannins that give it the unique flavor only mature brandy’s achieve, an experience you might never have tried before.
Disclaimer
Our Medronho is produced from wild arbutus berries, which grow naturally without the use of fertilizers, pesticides, or any chemical treatments. Although our production follows organic principles, we are currently in the third year of the organic certification transition process. Full certification is expected in 2026.
